My teens had an incredible time on our last mega ship cruise, and by the time we got off, we’d spent more on add-ons than a lot of all-inclusive lines would have charged for the whole trip upfront.
My Teens Loved Every Minute of It
I want to be fair about this before I get into the numbers, because the numbers alone would make it sound like a bad trip, and it wasn’t. My teens genuinely loved it. They met other kids on the ship’s Snapchat before we’d even left port, then spent evenings meeting up with them at the teen club. There was enough going on, activities, a waterpark, things built specifically for their age group, that they were never once bored. Twenty-five mega ship cruises in, that part of the formula still works exactly the way it’s supposed to.
Here’s What That Actually Cost
The base fare is never the real number on one of these ships, and this trip was a good reminder of just how much distance there can be between the two.
The drink package for our family ran $880. WiFi was $690, and that’s with a Diamond loyalty discount. It runs higher if you don’t already have status with the line. Just to access the waterpark for the day was $85 per person, so that was another $340 for the four of us. Gratuities added another $84 per day on top of everything else. A fishing trip for two cost $400, and visiting the sloths for two was another $226.
We also booked an ATV ride independently rather than through the ship, and that ended up being one of the highlights of the trip. I actually think that detail is worth including because it shows that not every memorable experience has to come through the cruise line or its excursion menu.
None of these are hidden fees exactly. They’re all disclosed if you go looking. But they’re also not part of the number that gets you excited about booking in the first place, and added together they turn a fare that looked reasonable into something considerably closer to what a fully inclusive line would have charged from the start.
Why I’d Book Star Class or Sky Class Next Time
Looking back, the math actually points toward pricing out a suite category, not automatically dismissing it as too expensive. The benefits vary depending on whether you’re booking Sky Class or Star Class, but once I start looking at what’s included and the additional perks that matter to us, the price difference isn’t as straightforward as comparing one cabin fare to another.
For a family of four, I want to compare what we’re actually going to spend. That means taking the regular cabin fare and adding the gratuities, WiFi, drinks, and the other extras we’d actually use, then comparing that total to the suite price and what comes with it. If I book a mega cruise ship again with my kids, I’m pricing out the suite first, not treating it as an unnecessary splurge.
One thing I would do differently next time is price the suite and regular cabin side by side before assuming the suite is the expensive option. For a family of four, the gap can look very different once you add the things we know we’re going to buy anyway. That’s especially true on a ship where WiFi, gratuities, drinks, and priority benefits can add up quickly.
The Real Lesson
A mega ship’s advertised fare can look very different from what a family actually pays once everyone starts adding the things that made them want that ship in the first place. That’s not a criticism of the trip itself, my teens would sign up again tomorrow. It’s just a reminder that the real comparison between cruise lines isn’t the sticker price. It’s the number on your final bill, and that number is worth pricing out honestly before you book, not after you’re already on board.
