By Tara B | Luxury River Cruise Specialist
I’ve personally sailed the Danube and booked many more on the Rhine, Seine and others—solo, with friends, and with groups I’ve booked—and these are the exact questions I’m asked every week.
Whether you’re upgrading from Viking, considering cruising solo, or just trying to figure out what to wear, this post is here to guide you with expert insight, firsthand experience, and helpful advice tailored for 50+ luxury travelers.
⸻
Planning & Booking Your Cruise
“I’ve done Viking. What’s next?”
If you’ve sailed with Viking, you’re ready to upgrade to something more immersive and upscale.

My top recommendations:
• AmaWaterways – Offers more excursions, active options, and a warm, inclusive onboard culture.
• Avalon Waterways – Their panoramic suites are unmatched for views.
• Tauck – Ideal for travelers who want everything handled for them. (Learn more in my Tauck River Cruise Ships Guide.)
• Uniworld – A floating boutique hotel experience. (See why I love it in my Uniworld River Cruises Luxury Guide.)

Can three adults sleep in one cabin?
Most staterooms are made for two, but AmaWaterways and Avalon have select options for triples (like a sofa bed in a suite or connecting cabins). These are rare and book fast — especially for Christmas markets and summer.

Ask me about availability before they’re gone.
⸻
What is a single supplement? Can I avoid it?
This is an extra charge for solo travelers using a double room. But here’s a win:
One of my clients recently scored an AmaWaterways solo special with no supplement, saving over $2,000! Spotting these promos or working with me gets you access to the best offers.

⸻
Do you book flights with the river cruise company?
You can — and I often recommend it for convenience. You’ll get:
• Airport transfers
• Group rates
• Assistance if delays occur
Still, I often help clients upgrade flights or use points. We’ll compare both options so you’re covered.

⸻
What is CFAR insurance and is it worth it?
“Cancel For Any Reason” (CFAR) coverage allows you to cancel your trip and still recover part of your cost—even if it’s not a covered emergency. One of my clients used CFAR to back out due to a family wedding and was refunded 75%.
I always walk my travelers through the right coverage—see insights in Cruises for First-Time River Cruisers.
⸻
Life Onboard
Are there irons or can I bring a steamer?
There are no irons in the cabins (fire hazard), and most lines discourage steamers too. Some ships offer a laundry or pressing service. My tip: pack wrinkle-resistant clothes or use Downy spray.
⸻
Do cabins have coffee makers?
AmaWaterways’ suites include in-room coffee machines (a lifesaver on chilly mornings). All ships offer 24/7 coffee stations, but if you love that first cup in bed, book a suite—or ask me which ship has them.
Need caffeine to function? I’ll find you the perfect setup.

⸻
Do they give you a stainless steel water bottle?
Yes! On my last AmaWaterways cruise, we each received a sleek branded bottle for excursions. Some lines don’t offer this, so I always pack my own just in case.
⸻
What are the benefits of an AmaWaterways suite?
Here’s what my solo client Julie loved about her Ama suite on the Rhine:
• French + outside balcony combo
• Extra room to stretch out
• Double sinks (yes, even solo travelers love the space!)
• Priority access for reservations and excursions
I’ll help you decide if a suite is worth the upgrade—spoiler: often, it is.
⸻
Avalon Waterways: Panoramic Suite vs. Deluxe Stateroom
I cruised the Danube in an Avalon Panoramic Suite and never closed the wall-to-wall windows. It’s like floating in a glass cube.
• Panoramic Suite = open-air view, bed faces the river
• Deluxe = smaller, fixed windows
Want to compare layouts? I can show you side-by-side photos.

⸻
Packing & Prep
What do I wear?
River cruising is relaxed, but not sloppy. Think elevated casual:
• Layers
• Comfortable walking shoes
• A few nice outfits for dinners

⸻
What shoes should I pack for a Christmas market river cruise?
Picture this: you’re walking through a snow-dusted Strasbourg square, sipping glühwein, and your feet are warm and dry in waterproof boots. Trust me—skip the sneakers.
Pack:
• Waterproof ankle boots
• Wool socks
• One pair of evening flats
This is all detailed in my Christmas Market River Cruise post — and if you’re planning ahead, check out next season’s tips in Christmas Market River Cruise 2025 ot join my group trip to the Christmas Markets in Decemeber 2026.

⸻
What are the luggage policies?
There’s no official limit, but space is tight. I recommend:
• 1 medium rolling suitcase
• 1 carry-on tote
Soft-sided bags store easily under the bed. I help all my clients create personalized packing plans.

⸻
At the Destination
Can we explore ports independently from cruise excursions?
Yes! My favorite solo memory? Wandering Vienna at my own pace, camera in hand, while others rushed through a group tour. You can:
• Join a guided tour
• Go out on your own
• Mix both
⸻
How are water levels affecting cruises?
It’s a real concern, but top-tier lines like Ama and Avalon are prepared. If water levels rise or drop, they adjust ships and routes with minimal disruption. I monitor levels for my clients pre-trip. Learn more in my River Cruise Water Levels guide.
⸻
Which lines cruise the Mekong River?

I’ve worked with many travelers on Southeast Asia itineraries. The best luxury options:
• AmaWaterways – elegant and intimate
• Avalon – modern and spacious
• Uniworld – all-inclusive, richly styled
Each offers unique experiences—let’s find your match.
⸻
Solo & Sentimental
Will I feel lonely if I cruise alone?
Absolutely not. Solo travelers love river cruises because:
• Ships are small and social
• Group excursions build connection
• Staff remember your name and preferences
See more in Solo Travel Luxe Ease by River — my solo travelers often return with new friendships.
⸻
Ways to memorialize the trip?
One of my favorite clients created a photo book after her Douro cruise with scanned menus and handwritten journal entries. You can:
• Keep a travel journal
• Collect small souvenirs
• Order a photo book
• Frame a map with your itinerary
Want a custom keepsake idea? I have tons.
⸻
Why I Recommend AmaWaterways (Especially for First-Timers and Solo Travelers)

If you’re ready to take your river cruising to the next level, AmaWaterways stands out for:
• Exceptional service
• Active, immersive excursions
• Great solo pricing promos
• Suite layouts that actually feel luxurious
I’ve cruised with Ama solo and with groups, and I consistently hear the same thing: “This was my best trip ever.”
